Choosing the right pump

Increasing the water pressure in your home, whether to showers, baths, taps or any other water outlet is often required for gravity fed systems (where the water is fed from a hot water tank and a cold water tank in the loft for example.

There are two main types:

Positive

This is for when the water being fed to the pump is more than 1m above the pump itself- for example when the cold water tank is in the loft. The gravity pushes the water to the pump which switches it on and increases the pressure.

These pumps do not have an air tank attached.

Negative (also called Universal)

These pumps have an obvious metal air tank attached. These pumps will require less initial 'push' from the gravity fed water so are best for when the cold water and hot water is less than 1m above the tank. They turn on automatically, pressurise the system and then start as soon as the water outlet (eg tap) is switched on. They also have non-return valves (check valves) internally to stop the water running back the wrong way.

Twin pump

These have 4 hoses- one side for hot in/out and the other cold in/out.

Single pump

These have 2 hoses- either hot OR cold but not both

What brand is best?

At PelhamPumps we only stock the best quality pumps- many available fall short of our high expectations. Brass pumps are best for longevity (and can last up to around 25 years installed and are usually serviceable if any issues arise), whereas plastic pumps are cheaper but often run for around 20 minutes before needing to be switched off and cooled down.

What pressure should I get?

The pressure relates to how fast the water gushes from the outlet. The higher the pressure, the higher the maximum water flow, but also the quicker the tank drains. 2 and 3 bar pumps are most commonly fitted in uk households and small businesses. 4.5 bar is the highest we stock.

What about the pipe size?

In the uk, household piping is 15 and 22mm. Adaptors are commonly available to convert between the two and a Stuart Turner Monsoon although exiting at 22mm can be easily piped into 15mm system within the house itself.

Am I ok to install myself?

Although pumps and spares are usually very simple in their operation, it's always best to consult a qualified plumber if you are at all unsure of how an installation should be carried out or have any questions.
